Which city/cities in Japan did you visit? We visited Hiroshima, Kyoto and Nara when using our passes and Kumamoto while staying with friends beforehand. We also took the ferry over to Miyajima Isalnd (free with the rail pass), which is a real 'must see' and went to Mount Aso to see the volcano.
Which of these did you enjoy the most? C. People
Your review The Japanese people are very polite and helpful. The trains are incredibly easy to use and are so much better than in the UK in all areas. The history and culture of Japan is fascinating.

Being a vegetarian was a bit of a struggle at times, but Japan is now fairly cosmopolitan, so finding Indian food, pizza, etc. was easy. I know that means I didn't fully get into the Japanese way of life, but I don't eat fish, which is a staple of the Japanese diet.

It poured with rain (due to a typhoon - the rainy season was supposed to be over) when we went to Hiroshima, which was a shame, as we didn't fully appreciate the atmosphere of the Peace Park there. That was definitely the biggest disappointment of the whole trip, but there is no accounting for weather!

I would definitely recommend Japan and buying the rail pass beforehand is incredibly good value if you make full use of it. This could even become the new 'Interrailing' in years to come.
