FAQ japan Rail Pass General

Q. We want to change our 7day passes to 14day

We have received our 7days passes today but actually we want to change it to 14days. Can we do that?

faq If you decide to change the type of pass you have after purchasing it, there is a £15 charge for doing so. This includes changing from national to regional passes and all durations of pass.

This charge is per order of passes and not charged individually for each pass.

Please return your original pass to us then we will send you the new one.

Q. Can Japan rail pas use on Metro in Tokyo?

faq The Japan Rail Pass is valid on all trains in Japan which are operated by JR (Japan Rail). There are some private companies which operate the train too. The Tokyo Metro is one such private line and your JR pass will unfortunately not be valid on it. If your pass is valid while you are in Tokyo, the best way to get around is on the standard over ground network (JR Yamanote line) as you will be able to use your pass with it.

You can download a JR over ground train map of the greater Tokyo area here:

Q. Twilight Express - between Osaka and Sapporo

faq The JR Pass does cover the basic fare, however it does not cover the room fare and express charge.

Extra express surcharge: 3,150 yen (between Osaka or Shin-Osaka or Kyoto and any stations in Hokkaido)

Q. Exchange my pass at Kansai airport

I will be arriving to Kansai airport on 05th Feb at 9pm. Can I exchange my Japan rail pass on that day?

faq The exchange office at Kansai airport station open until 23:00, so you can validate your pass straight away

Q. Is there a child rail pass price?

Can you advice our kids (7 and 10 years) can get a child discount?

faq Yes, it’s half the price of adult fare. The child rate applies for children aged 6 to 11 years old, so both of your kids are applicable for child rate.

Q. Best way to get to Nikko from Tokyo area using JR pass?

there are only 2 departures from Shinjuku (7:30AM and 1:05PM) and Ikebukuro (7:37AM and 1:11PM) and 2 trips back from Tobu-Nikko station per day (10:45AM and 4:37PM).

Q. Kansai pass for Japanese national?

I am Japanese but has permanent residency in the UK, am I allowed to use Kansai area pass?

faq No. Japanese passport holder is not valid to use Kansai pass or any other JR Passes.

Q. Storing luggage

Is there any space for storing luggage on the shinkansen train?

faq There is no proper luggage space on the Shinkansen, so in case you can’t place your luggage on the overhead rack you will need to store them in the space behind the last row of seats at the end of the carriage. But the space is very small and limited.

Q. Exchange office at Fukuoka airport

I am arriving to Fukuoka airport at 15:25 on 15th Oct and would like to start using the pass straight away. Can I exchange the pass at the airport?

faq Unfortunately there is no exchange office at Fukuoka airport. You will be visiting the exchange office at JR Hakata station which is only 2 stops away from the airport by subway.

Q. Tokyo to Hakone by rail pass?

We are thinking of going to Hakone. Can we use our rail pass to get there from Tokyo?

faq You can use your rail pass up to JR Odawara station. If you wish to go to Hakoneyumoto station, take a private rail from Odawara, will only cost about £3.00 (17mins).
