FAQ japan Rail Pass General

Q. Would the JR Pass allow us to make this journey?

We are visiting Japan in April.

We are going to be in Tokyo for few days then travelling to Kyoto, Okayama, Kotohira and then we go back to Tokyo.

All this will be within 7 days. Rail pass will cover this journey and worth to buy a pass?

faq Yes, it will be covered and you will save lots travelling with 7days pass.

Tokyo – Kyoto by Hikari: ¥13,020
Kyoto – Okayama by Hikari: ¥7,130
Okayama – Kotohira by Nanpu: ¥2,760
Kotohira – Tokyo by Nanpu & Hikari: ¥17,390
Total single ticket price: ¥40,300 (7days rail pass is ¥28,300)

*Please note – You cannot use the pass for Non JR trains and Nozomi/Mizuho (Shinkansen/bullet train).

Q. Can I take Mizuho Shinkansen from Fukuoka to Kagoshima?

faq Japan rail pass is not valid to travel on Mizuho shinkansen but the All Kyushu pass (Regional pass) allows you to travel on Mizuho from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo.

Q. Validity in hours or days?

We arrive at Narita Airport at 9am Fri 12th October and travel by train into Tokyo.

On Monday 15th we travel by train to Kyoto.
On Thursday 18th we travel by train from Kyoto to Kanazawa.
On Fri 19 October we travel from Kanazawa to Narita Airport by train.

If we authenticate our JR 7 day Rail Passes at Narita airport say at 10am on Fri 12th will it cover the trains on Fri 19th in the morning between Kanazawa and Narita airport on our return journey?

faq I’m afraid if you validate a 7day JR Pass on 12Oct, it will only be valid for travel until the 18th Oct. The validity measured in days not in hours. What you can do is purchase a single ticket for your travel from Narita airport to Tokyo costing about £30 and validate JR pass to start on the 13th. That way, you will be able to use it on the 19th and cover your travel from Kanazawa to Narita airport which is more expensive than Narita to Tokyo. A single ticket from Kanazawa to Narita costs approx. £185.00.

Q. Online order failed, why?

I have just tried to order online but it has failed. Please see below screen shot.

Could you advise what I should do?

It seems your card details are incorrect. Please check all details carefully such as card type, number and billing address etc… are correct and kindly try again. If you still encounter the same problem please let us know.

Q. Exchange at Haneda airport

Can I exchange the pass at Haneda airport? My flight arrives at 5am. I couldn’t find the opening hours at Haneda office…

faq There is a travel service centre at Haneda airport, however they don’t open until11:00am. We suggest to exchange at Tokyo station that will open at 07:30am although you will probably need to wait a while until they open.

The journey time is approx. 30mins by Keikyu and JR lines from Haneda airport to Tokyo station. The ticket price is ¥560 (approx. £4) .

Q. Tokyo to Kyoto by Nozomi

How can I travel from Tokyo to Kyoto if I cannot take ‘Nozomi’ train with rail pass?

faq You can take a ‘Hikari’ or ‘Kodama’ Shinkansen instead. Hikari is the fastest service on that route covered by Japan rail pass. Hikari stops at few more stations than Nozomi so it will take slightly longer than Nozomi. Kodama stops at all stations.

Q. Does it cover all the major routes?

Just wondering if the rail pass covers you for all the major routes on the bullet trains, and is it reasonably obvious what trains we will be able to use?

I imagine that it would probably be worthwhile having it if we intend to visit four or five places in the two weeks we are there?

faq The JR Pass will be valid for most routes on bullet and non-bullet JR operated trains except for ‘Nozomi’ and ‘Mizuho’. In place, you can use alternative bullet trains such as Hikari, Sakura, etc. For more information on how and where to use pass, please click HERE

Q. Pass for my friend working in Japan

I will be visiting my friend who is currently working in Tokyo. We are planning to travel together using Japan rail pass. Can I buy a pass for my friend from you? She is British and living Japan less than one year.

faq Unfortunately your friend is not eligible for Japan rail pass. The Japan Rail Pass can only be used by visitors to Japan. This means that you will need to show that you have a ‘temporary visitor’ entry status in your passport when you validate your passes. I assume she holds working visa or working holiday visa, so she is not eligible for Japan Rail Pass.

Q. Sanyo Area pass?

Can I use it to travel from Tokyo to Osaka and Osaka to Hiroshima?

faq The Sanyo area pass is not valid to travel to/from Tokyo. This pass is valid to travel within Sanyo area only. Please see the map where it’s covered.

This Sanyo area pass is valid to travel on ‘Nozomi’ and ‘Mizuho’, so very useful if you were planning to travel only this area.

For your itinerary, only the main Japan rail pass is valid.

Q. can I buy a rail pass in advance?

I will be in Japan next May but will be travelling to other countries in Asia before then. Can I purchase a Rail Pass now and will it be valid in six/seven month time?

I leave the UK 20Nov12 and arrive in Japan 25May13

faq I’m afraid you can’t purchase the JR Pass at this time if you intend to use it in May13. The voucher has to be exchanged in Japan within 3months from date of purchase. As such, the earliest you may purchase is around February. You may order the Pass online by then and we can post to your preferred address overseas.
